Mom used to send care packages of two-bite brownies to Beloit., as if i couldn't get them at Woodman's. Delicious, though. These sound pretty damn good, too.

[...] My mom and I love Anna Quindlen and have for years, along with Anne Lamott and a tiny canon of other women writers. Quindlen’s life story is fascinating: She is a phenom from way, way back who has matured into a humane, sophisticated commentator on her life at the tail end of the Baby Boom. She wrote One True Thing, which was Cannonball #5. [...]

I was also tempted to dislike her until I thought about a favorite friend from high school whom Emma reminded me of. It was a great recommendation and you were right, so good show!

Whoo! I remember that review, and I was the first person to tell you to read Emma. I feel so proud.
One thing that kept me from disliking Emma, the character, was imagining Alicia Silverstone as Cher in Clueless. What a great adaptation that movie was.

Caroline, I love, love, love this book. It's my favorite Austen book, and Austen's my favorite author (after the luminous John Steinbeck, of course). Great review!!

I'm so sorry, Caroline. I had to do the same with my dog (oh, my baby, I miss him so much) in the fall. He had diabetes and was so sick and blind and I couldn't watch him hurt anymore. Yes, I know that it's easy and true to say "Well, she's not in pain anymore" but we still hurt. And hurt.

I liked this novel a lot - despite being rather short, it is incredibly powerful, even though I had seen the movie and knew exactly what was going to happen. It seems like this novel occasionally gets a bad reputation because people had to read it in high school, but I really liked it. Have you read East of Eden? That's my favorite Steinbeck. I'm going to have to check out Travels with Charley, I've been hearing that one mentioned quite a lot on CBR blogs.
