OF A GOLDEN AGE

earlier this evening, i was talking with three friends. one of them told a story about a girl whose name was, at least phonetically, “m’lynn.” i commented that that was the name of the character in steel magnolias and this led, in a roundabout way, to him asking, “isn’t louisiana’s state flower the magnolia?”

“what, how should i know?” i say.

he scoffs a little and says, “you know a lot of weird stuff, don’t act like you don’t.”

while i was working at the student center this afternoon, the vice president for enrollment asked me if i had a bottle opener.
