Dear Round Table,
That last issue was awesome. I just wanted to tell all you dudes who put all the hard work into it: it paid off. I was psyched to read it, and read much of it aloud to my girlfriend Kasia as she was doing something on the computer. I liked it a lot because it was interesting, funny, and thought-provoking. I especially liked the article about sports, the one about conservative families, and of course, dave’s article. Another good one was my own, which was formatted magnificently. You’re welcome.
I know that it is hard putting out the awesome newspaper, but it is nice to get and to read. Thank you for putting all your unpaid time into it — I admire it. Please see me for free back-pats.
Thank you,
Anders

connected monochromatic regions

here is one of the math problems from the putnam exam:
an m x n checkerboard is colored randomly: each square is independently assigned red or black with probability 1/2. We say that two squares, p and q, are in the same connected monochromatic region if there is a sequence of squares, all of the same color, starting at p and ending at q, in which successive squares in the sequence share a common side. show that the expected number of connected monochromatic regions is greater than mn/8.
